For a nation that has lifted the World Cup four times, the current situation feels almost unreal. Italy, once the gold standard of international football, now faces the very real possibility of missing a third consecutive World Cup.

In the 2026 World Cup European playoff semifinal, Italy must first overcome Northern Ireland. On paper, this is a match they are expected to win. But as recent history has shown, nothing comes easy for the Azzurri anymore.

If they manage to get past Northern Ireland, the task becomes even harder. Waiting in the playoff final will be the winner between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Wales — a single match standing between Italy and the World Cup finals. One mistake, one bad night, and the dream is over again.

Ranked 12th in the world, Italy last appeared in a World Cup 12 years ago. For a country with such pedigree, that gap is almost unthinkable.

In terms of squad availability, Italy will be without key figures Marco Verratti and Federico Chiesa due to injuries. However, there are still reasons for optimism. Sebastiano Esposito is in red-hot form up front, his Inter teammate Federico Dimarco will be a constant threat on the wing, and between the posts stands the ever-reliable Gianluigi Donnarumma. This is still a team with enough quality and belief to get the job done.

Northern Ireland, meanwhile, will be missing two important fullbacks — captain Bradley and Lewis — which could create opportunities for Italy to exploit the flanks.

This playoff path is not just about qualification. It is about restoring pride, ending a painful streak, and proving that Italy still belongs on the biggest stage in world football.

The question isn’t whether Italy should qualify.

The question is: can they finally handle the pressure when it matters most?
