This game at Anfield is more complex than it looks. Liverpool still have the stronger squad on paper, but their current defensive situation lines up uncomfortably well with Fulham’s main attacking pattern.

Liverpool are dealing with a disrupted back line. Alisson Becker is out, the center-back pairing is unsettled with Ibrahima Konaté needing a new partner, and both right-side defensive options are unavailable. This forces a young full-back into a role that Fulham are perfectly designed to test.

Fulham’s tactical DNA is built around the left flank. Antonee Robinson constantly overlaps and delivers early crosses into the box. Even if personnel change on the wing, this crossing system remains. Liverpool may rely on Virgil van Dijk to handle aerial threats, but the real issue is repeated wide pressure, recovery runs, and second-ball battles that can drain a reshuffled defense over time.

In midfield, Liverpool’s technical quality is far superior. Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai thrive in tight combinations and positional rotations. However, with Wataru Endō absent, Liverpool lack a true defensive screen when they press high.

Fulham’s midfield, led by Harrison Reed and Tom Cairney, is built on work rate and shape recovery. They can disrupt rhythm, but they carry a weakness: vulnerability to vertical through balls when their lines step out. This is exactly the kind of space Liverpool’s quick passing can exploit.

Another key point is Fulham’s build-up through Calvin Bassey. If Liverpool’s forwards press him aggressively and cut passing lanes, Fulham may be forced into rushed clearances. Paradoxically, Fulham are comfortable counter-attacking but not comfortable defending counters after losing the ball during build-up — a scenario Liverpool will try to create.

Expect Fulham to repeatedly attack Liverpool’s right defensive channel, while Liverpool probe Fulham’s central spacing with rotations and through passes. The game may be decided not by possession, but by which team loses its structure first.
